Stress Less, Live More and Protect Your Heart
Date: 02/07/25
Life is full of stress—whether it's work, finances, or family responsibilities. But did you know stress can take a serious toll on your heart? When you're stressed, your heart rate speeds up, your blood vessels tighten, and over time, this can increase your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and poor sleep.
The good news? You can train your body to handle stress in a healthier way! Just like your "fight or flight" response kicks in automatically, your body also has a built-in relaxation response that slows your heart rate, lowers blood pressure, and helps you feel calm. The key is learning how to activate it.
Simple Ways to Reduce Stress
Try these stress-busting techniques to protect your heart and improve your well-being:
- Meditation – Focus on your breath, a word, or an image to help calm racing thoughts.
- Progressive Muscle Relaxation – Tense and relax different muscle groups, from your toes to your face, to release built-up tension.
- Deep Breathing – Take slow, deep breaths in and out to instantly lower stress levels.
- Guided Imagery – Picture a peaceful place, like a quiet beach or a blooming garden, to bring a sense of calm.
Stress relief doesn’t always mean sitting still! Moving your body is another great way to unwind. Try yoga, tai chi, an art class, or a brisk walk with friends. Being in nature can also be a powerful stress reliever.
